About me
Returning from Vietnam permanently disabled, I began using poetry and photography to explore my identity as a disabled veteran. However, believing I needed to choose between photography and writing, photography became my livelihood for most of my adult life. Several years ago, I returned to writing.
These poems are from "Beyond the Reach of Reason", my award-winning artist book. They are drawn from my own personal experiences as a combat veteran, a disabled veteran, a disabled person. My experience is nothing unique. It is another echo of what countless veterans from so many wars have encountered. I offer these words as voice for those not as handy with words, and for those who have remained silent. These writings are firsthand reports of shaping a life of healing. They articulate the experiences of veterans and offer families and non-veterans insights into not the blood and guts of war, but the difficulties veterans encounter navigating a world shaped by their military service.
