About me
Eighteen years ago, for our first anthology, Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace, I wrote the afterword.
It’s time to start at the beginning. A cautionary tale, this is not a record of the past, simply a recollection of incidents and events during a challenging era. Like war stories we could not betray, revelations, consequences and understanding came later. The most compelling stories examine the ethical conflicts with which we all struggle. Our Veteran Writers’ Group motto: Tell the truth and so make peace. The telling helps make us whole again, while the listening helps amplify change. What matters is telling an old story in a way that resonates with a new generation.
I'm remembering the girl I was then when in 1969, the six o’clock news delivered the news of hundreds of body bags from Saigon directly into the living rooms of millions of Americans, but since their boys were not the ones dead, the American people went back to their affairs.
